£6 Million Settlement for Spinal Cord Injury

In 2020 Mr F was riding his motorcycle when a car driver travelling in the opposite direction turned right across his path causing a collision. Mr F suffered multiple life-threatening injuries. The car driver was convicted of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

After a long spell in hospital and nearly 3 years of rehabilitation Mr F was making a remarkable recovery and had returned to work and some pre-accident hobbies. Unfortunately, he then noticed neurological changes and was diagnosed with a post traumatic spinal cord syrinx (a fluid filled cavity that forms inside the spinal cord tissue). Despite surgeries the syrinx was untreatable and ultimately rendered Mr F paraplegic.

Bikelawyer obtained 14 expert reports for the Claimant, medical and non-medical, including from a spinal surgeon, a spinal rehabilitation expert (also dealing with life expectancy), an accommodation expert, a care costs expert, an assistive technology expert and a forensic accountant. Bikelawyer put Mr F in touch with a property finding and architectural company to assist Mr F in locating a suitable property and dealing with the extensive extension and adaptations required.

The Defendant team argued that Mr F did not need much care until later in life, an argument that Bikelawyer did not accept. Bikelawyer maintained, based on the expert evidence of the spinal neurorehabilitation expert and care expert, that Mr F needed a care package including 2 carers from now for the rest of his life. A settlement meeting took place in October 2026 at which the Defendant accepted that Mr F needed 2 carers hereon as well as for the accommodation required, including carer accommodation. The Defendant also accepted that Mr F would never work in remunerative employment again; a change in their previous position. The claim settled for £6 million at the settlement meeting.

Bikelawyer Partner Andrew Campbell and Solicitor Cameron Tippings acted for the Claimant.
