Struggling with mental health

I had a bike accident 18 months ago. My GP has said that I have reached as good as a recovery from my physical injuries that could be expected but my mental health has deteriorated since my accident. I have no history of problems with my mental health issues but now I am frequently tearful, sad and depressed. My solicitor says he will get me examined by a psychiatrist for a medical report in my compensation claim. Is there any other help that I can get so I can increase my chances of getting back to the happy-go-lucky and carefree person I was before the accident? I am sure that my moods are really affecting my family as well.

Answer

It is often the case that seriously injured claimants suffer from psychiatric or psychological problems and it is a normal reaction. Adjusting to new physical limitations and restrictions in life can be difficult to accept and guilt such as yours about the burden placed on family members is also common, with partners often becoming care providers. There are numerous sources of help and I recommend that you ask your GP for referral to a specialist for help. This could take the form of therapy (often cognitive behavioural therapy, commonly referred to as CBT) or medication, but each person has their own needs and the specialist will advise you based on your needs.  There are also charities that can help, for example Make Your Mark, which offers mental health support for bikers.
