I’m depressed after the accident

I had a nasty motorbike accident in August 2024. My doctor has advised that I’ve recovered as much as can reasonably be expected from my physical injuries. However, since the accident, my mental health has declined. I’ve never previously experienced mental health issues, but I now often feel tearful, low, and depressed and my sleep is affected because my anxiety keeps me awake.

My solicitor has arranged for me to be assessed by a psychiatrist as part of my compensation claim. Is there any additional support available that could help me recover emotionally and improve my wellbeing? I’m also concerned that my low mood is affecting my wife and daughter who have to put up with my moods.

Answer

It is very common for individuals who have suffered serious injuries to also experience psychological or psychiatric difficulties. Adjusting to physical limitations and changes in daily life can be challenging. Feelings of guilt, particularly about the impact on loved ones, are also frequently encountered. In many cases, partners take on caregiving roles, which can add to these emotions.

There are several forms of support available. You should consider asking your GP for a referral to an appropriate specialist. Treatment options may include therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR), medication, or a combination of approaches. The most suitable course of action will depend on your individual circumstances, and a specialist will be able to recommend the best support for your needs.
