Wales - Motorcycle Accident Statistics for 2009
The latest statistics about motorcycle user casualties has been released by the Welsh Assembly Government. The main points arising are:
• In 2009, the chance of a motorcycle rider being killed or seriously injured, per kilometre travelled, is around 53 times greater than for a car driver;
• Out of a group of 100 typical motorcyclists in Wales, the statistical expectation is that one of this group will be killed or seriously injured in 19 months of driving;
• Since 2001 approximately 90 per cent of motorcycle user casualties are male;
• Since the late 1990s, casualties aged 30 and over have exceeded those aged under 30;
• Around 3 out of 5 motorcyclist casualties in Wales as a whole were riding machines with an engine capacity of over 500cc;
• Compared with car occupant casualties, motorcycle user casualties were more likely to occur in the spring/summer, and less likely to occur in winter;
• Compared with car occupant casualties, motorcycle user casualties were more likely to occur at weekends;
• The highest number of motorcyclist casualties was in Powys (11 per cent of the total) followed by Carmarthenshire, Cardiff, Swansea and Pembrokeshire.
There were 57,000 motorcycles licensed in Wales in 2009. This is 60% higher than in 2000 when the figure was 35,000. This compares with car growth of 23% over the same time period.
